The number one cause of blocked drains on the North Coast
If your drain keeps blocking and you've already had it cleared once or twice, the answer is almost certainly tree roots. Older terracotta and PVC drains have joints that develop tiny gaps over time. Tree roots find those gaps, push in, and grow inside the pipe — drawn by the moisture and nutrients. Eventually they create a mat that catches everything else flowing through, and you've got a blocked drain.
This is the most common drain problem we see in Forster and across the North Coast. The good news: it's very solvable.
How we deal with tree roots in drains
Step 1 — Confirm with CCTV
We send the camera down to see exactly where the roots are entering, how much pipe they've affected, and what the surrounding pipe condition is like. This tells us how to clear them and what to recommend for prevention.
Step 2 — Cut them out with hydro jetting
High-pressure water with a root-cutting head clears the roots from inside the pipe quickly and cleanly — far more effective than mechanical cabling, which can leave fragments behind for the roots to regrow around.
Step 3 — Prevent them coming back
Cutting roots is the short-term fix. Long-term, the gap in the pipe needs to be sealed or replaced. Depending on how much pipe is affected, that's either a spot repair, a section of pipe relining, or in serious cases a replacement of the affected pipe section. We'll explain the options and let you decide.
Common questions about tree roots in drains
Q: Can I just use a chemical root killer?
A: Chemical treatments offer some short-term help but don't fix the underlying problem. The gap in the pipe is still there, and the roots will eventually return. They also don't work as well as physical removal once roots are well-established. We don't recommend them as a primary solution.
Q: Will I have to remove the tree?
A: Usually no. Repairing or relining the affected pipe section so roots can no longer enter is almost always the better solution than removing the tree.
Q: How do I know if tree roots are causing my blockage?
A: The big clue is recurrence. A drain that blocks, gets cleared, and blocks again within months is almost certainly a root issue. CCTV inspection confirms it definitively.
